One would think that making a 24-part epic (which more or less uses the same beat on loop) composed of soap opera-esque plot twists would never work . . . but it did. One would think that, during his trial, his nonsensical, desperate defense team strategies were insane . . . until they worked.

Girl Talk is one of those things you either love or hate. I choose love friends.

For those of you who have no idea who/what Girl Talk is, he's the crown prince of mashup. What makes him special is mostly an issue of sheer quantity; he often stuffs 20 or 30 samples, often explicit enough where the careful listener can identify them, into a 3 minute song. It's very different and very fredgy.

In addition to just sitting back with a good pair of headphones and trying to pick out the samples, I'd also suggest listening to it with the wiki (which lists all of the identified samples) and trying to figure out what is what. Alternatively, you can watch these bizarre videos, which mash up the music videos of the sampled songs in a fashion equally disorienting and strangely appealing to the music itself.

Lastly, you can just watch this video, for one of the best songs of 2007, which is liberally sampled from in the first song on the new Girl Talk record:

The Moth - Unscripted, typically highly personal stories told by authors and comedians. Sort of like This American Life, but significantly less pretentious and infinitely less likely to talk about the war in Iraq or try to make some overreaching social statement.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - An amateur historian reads a lot and then gives his musings on peculiar topics in history. For example, the last episode was about the influence of substance abuse on history. As an example, during WWII, Hitler was hopped up on amphetamines, Stalin was blackout drunk for large stretches of the war, Ole Winston drank all day. This is important information to know.

The film Idiocracy takes place in a futuristic world in which the mass consumerization of anything and everything, coupled with government corruption, has led to a world where plants are fed with an energy drink (Brawndo, The Thirst Mutilator) rather than with water. The plants don't grow. Nobody understands why.

The country USA takes place in a real world where films like Idiocracy are made and then some guy licenses the rights to sell the fictional product that is destroying the world in a satire about how dumb we are becoming. This is then covered by the New York Times. It is inconclusive if buying the drink in real life is a sly dig at consumerism or the beginning of the fulfillment of the Idiocracy prophecy.

I am not sure what to make of all this, except I am now going to try to popularize the term "meta-satire" in addition to "fredgy". Can meta-fredgy be far behind?

My sketch comedy heroes from my youth (The State, Kids In the Hall) have both reunited and are both producing material again. And, unlike most old rock bands that reunite, the material doesn't suck. In fact, I'd even say it's a little bit fredgy.

The Hater

The Hater is a web log, which calls itself "Pop Culture Love Letters". The tone is outright shock and borderline disgust accompanied by giddy laughter at the absurdity of it all. There are other web logs which claim to do the same, but they are typically more mean spirited and full of photoshopped ejaculate. There is no need for such nonsense, and the quality of this particular web log, as well as the general tone, makes it fairly fredgy. They also unearth some pretty good stuff, like this:

Human Giant

With a few notable exceptions, the first season of most sketch comedy shows is pretty rocky. Usually, it takes a season or two of follies before things start to get better.

The first season of Human Giant on MTV was reasonably funny, certainly above average. But I have hope that the second season will see the boys hit their collective stride.

I had the flu last week. And, while there are many very tangible downsides to having the flu, there is some upside. Specifically, I marched myself down to Target, picked up Season 6 of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and rolled through it in about two days. Despite some critics clearly tiring of the show (probably because it's incredibly formulaic), I think this was probably the most consistently funny season yet. That is due, in no small part, to the comedic stylings of JB Smoove. I only hope our next president can get a divorce, have a breakdown, date, impregnate, and become engaged to an ex-supermodel nicknamed "Maneater" within the first 8 months in office. My guess is, Giuliani is the most likely to go down such a path.

You can only watch so many episodes of American Gladiators before the nostalgia fades and you wonder, why am I watching this? (The answer to that question is 1, by the way). Sadly, we can't all have HBO and The Wire.

Luckily, the internet is not on strike and lots of fairly fredgy people are making pretty fredgy tv shows. The shows are shorter too, which helps only throw fuel on our American ADD fire. Below are some of the funnier internet TV shows I've come across.

Although we are amidst a golden age of television, in which writers feel comfortable making incredibly involved, morally ambiguous television, you have to pay a fair amount of money for that shit. thus, i would like to note, that there is some pretty fredgy radio out there. And it is free. And you can put it on your pod and listen to it at work.

New Urbanism

New urbanism is a city planning philosphy that basically says people should live in cities and use public transit. It's not that complicated, but good ideas rarely are.

This movie is simultaneously funny, fresh, and edgy (furedgy). Additionally, it exudes the ethos of new urbanism:

It should be noted that I am basically just reposting something from maximumfun.org (host of one of my favorite radio programs, The Sound of Young America). TSOYA is totally fredgy and should be part of your weekly routine, as it is mine.

for me, steely dan is perpetually fredgy; unfortunately, i realize that i hold the minority opinion on the matter. however, when kanye west samples you very explicitly, i think that you get to be fredgy again. so, steely dan, enjoy your refredginess.

perhaps the moderate popularity of other regional dances (e.g. ghost riding the whip, the aunt jackie dance, chicken noodle soup dance, and, more recently, the soulja boy crank dat superman dance) makes this insufficiently fresh to be fredgy. i agree; it's borderline fredgy. but there is something refreshing about all this crazy dancing and 80's video editing techniques that is ultimately sufficiently endearing to deem the whole phenomenon fredgy.

behold, "juke", a chicago dance style that is essentially spastic and hypnotic rapid foot movements, and is, by all means, both fresh and edgy:
